[COLUMN] 1996 The very first scheduled 747 operator at MST. American International Airways B747-200 N707CK

The last few weeks we've got really spoiled by our last new MST 747 operators, Sky Gates and Silkway. Once again a 747 seemed to be a common plane on our cargo apron(s), after the lost of Cargolux. But who was the first scheduled 747 operator ever on MST?

As we all know Flying Tigers operates the very first cargocharter with a 747 ever to Beek in 1982. Up to 1996 we had many charters, several diversions, and even some 747 testflights at Beek. But it took untill March 1996 when American International Airways/Kalitta announced a weekly scheduled service between Ypsilante and Maastricht with a 747. Therefore AIA did some cargocharters between those two airports with 747-100F and L-1011F equipement. For the scheduled flights they used their B747-200F's. A couple of months after the new service AIA also started a scheduled service between Buenos Aires and Maastricht on behalf of Iberia Cargo. It was the start of a 747 period at MST inwhere we had 15 747's on the tarmac in August. And that was a lot in those years! AIA had some help from Evergreen International and Atlas Air on both services. And another short time 747 operator in that period was Saha Air from Iran.

But let's go back to March 1996 when the N707CK was the first scheduled 747 at MST ever. Here you see the Queen doing a one-eighty and backtrack the runway towards the B-apron on a Saturday afternoon.
