Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has denied reports that members of the Belarusian KGB were on board a Ryanair plane flying to Vilnius from Athens. The politician called such rumors groundless, RIA Novosti reports.
Thus, after the EU summit, at which sanctions against Minsk were discussed, Mitsotakis answered the corresponding question of journalism. She relayed the words of the airline's director, who was sure that state security officers were present on the flight.
"I want to make it clear that at the moment there is absolutely no indication that someone inside the plane was involved in the process of deflecting the plane from its course and eventually landing in Minsk, and not in Vilnius, where it was going to land," the Prime Minister stressed, adding that he would have the data if they were true.
On the eve of the head of the airline Ryanair Michael O'Leary said that on board the plane landed in Minsk because of the message about the bomb, several employees of the KGB of Belarus could be present. According to him, representatives of the special services during the flight followed the creator of the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA Roman Protasevich and got off the plane immediately after the emergency landing of the airliner in Minsk.
On May 23, a Ryanair plane made an emergency landing in Minsk after reports of mining operations from the Minsk airport. Immediately after landing, Belarusian security forces detained Roman Protasevich, the founder of the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA, and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, who was on board. In Belarus, he could face up to 15 years in prison.
