Russia will help Belarus if sanctions are imposed against the latter. This was told to RIA Novosti by the director of the Department of Economic Cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry Dmitry Birichevsky.

"We will protect our partner Belarus [from the negative consequences of sanctions], we will help our allies," he promised.

According to Birichevsky, it is the "Westerners" who see Minsk's fault in the incident with the forced landing of the Ryanair plane. The diplomat called for an investigation first, and only then to respond to what happened. Moscow's approach allegedly consists in "not taking impulsive measures".

Belarus has repeatedly received loans from Russia. One of them became known after the meeting of Russian and Belarusian leaders Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukashenko on May 28: soon Minsk will receive the second tranche of a loan from Russia in the amount of $ 500 million.

At the same time, experts have repeatedly pointed out the damage that Moscow suffers from such assistance. In particular, the program director of the Russian Council for International Affairs Ivan Timofeev in an interview with " " noted that the Russian side bears serious costs from providing assistance to Belarus. The sanctions that Western countries threaten to impose against the background of the incident with Ryanair may turn into another loss.

On May 23, in Minsk, a Ryanair plane en route from Athens to Vilnius was forced to land in Belarus due to a message from dispatchers about an explosive device planted on board. Then Roman Protasevich, the former editor-in-chief of the opposition Telegram channel NEXTA, and his girlfriend, Russian Sofia Sapega, were detained.
