The captain and shipowner of the Russian merchant ship Amur, which was detained in Japan, officially asked for help from the Russian Consulate General in Sapporo. This was announced by Consul General Sergei Markin, RIA Novosti reports.
"The consul has been there since last night, the legal status has not changed, but the captain and the shipowner have officially requested our consular assistance," the consul General said. He added that a decision on the issue is expected in the coming days.
Earlier, the Russian Consul General said that the Russian merchant ship "Amur" will leave the Japanese port if the Japanese authorities do not bring charges because of the incident in the Sea of Okhotsk.
On May 26, the Russian merchant ship Amur and the Japanese fishing vessel Dai-hachi Hokko-maru collided off the coast of Hokkaido. As a result, five Japanese sailors were rescued by the Russian crew, three wounded died. The Japanese side is conducting an investigation in connection with the incident, the captain of the Russian vessel was involved in the proceedings.
